Present and Future of Indigenous Games
Playing, watching and following Cricket and Football has been like religious rituals these days.
Westernisation as we call it !
But wait, we cannot forget the basics !
India in ancient time has been known for lot more games apart from Cricket and Football.
Let us explore what all we as Indians have invented and call indigenous games.
Hockey (so called National Game,not officially)
- We have won 8 Olympic Gold Medals which gets us at the top of the chart.
Kabaddi
- Originated in Tamilnadu. Inspite of being national game of Bangladesh, we have not let them win any of 7 contests and won
- 7 gold medals in Asia Kabaddi Cup. India has won all 4 Kabaddi World Cup staying an unbeaten champion.
- Women have never let us down in Women's World Cup since 2012 defeating Iran and New Zealand.
- Kabaddi in India is the most popular indigenous games played in recent times.
Chess
- Chess is believed to have originated in India, some time before the 7th century, being derived from the Indian game of chaturanga.
- The former World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand has been lifting our spirits high by promoting game in remote areas.
Carrom
- The game of carrom is believed to have originated from the Indian subcontinent. This game is all about accuracy, targets and concentration.
- It has been very popular game in recent times and considered as strategically most interesting game next to chess. This game involves 2 or 4 people which makes it more interesting.
Archery
- Indian Archers earned 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze at Bangkok-Asian Archery Championship.
- Deepika Kumari lifted India on international podium by winning Individual Bronze Medal in 2nd Stage Archery World Cup recently. She had proudly received Padma Shri Accolade at an Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
- Indian Archery Team won 10 Gold & 4 Silver in 12th South Asian Games.
And there are lot more games like Gilli Danda, Kho Kho, etc . But, I think above is enough to prove that we have got talent in indigenous games as well !
Well, future needs more and identifying and uplifting them needs more domestic leagues and competitions.
Come out and promote indigenous sports as they are fundamentals and founded our great nation included freedom of speech, religion and spirits of course !
